what happens when absolute power meets absolute freedom?
When the Most Powerful Man on Earth Was Told to “Move Aside”… The Reply That Destroyed Ego Forever
⸻
What happens when absolute power meets absolute freedom?
Alexander the Great stood before a man who owned nothing — no palace, no army, no wealth — yet possessed something emperors secretly crave: inner independence.
That man was Diogenes.
History remembers this moment not as a meeting of status, but as a collision between illusion and truth.
Alexander, conqueror of nations, offered to grant any wish. Imagine that — the world at your feet.
But Diogenes did not ask for gold.
He did not ask for protection.
He did not ask for fame.
He simply said:
“Move aside. You are blocking my sunlight.”
In one sentence, centuries of human ambition were exposed.
This is the difference between having the world and needing nothing from it.
Power seeks recognition.
Freedom requires none.
Most people spend their entire lives chasing what they believe will complete them — success, approval, possessions — never realizing that the deepest liberation begins the moment you stop depending on what can be taken away.
Diogenes was not impressed because a man who knows himself cannot be intimidated by crowns.
And here lies the uncomfortable question:
👉 If the world stood before you and said, “Ask anything,” would you know what truly matters?
Or have you been trained to desire what society told you was valuable?
This story is not about the past.
It is a mirror.
Because real wealth is not measured by what you control…
…but by what you no longer need.

Recorded in ancient historical accounts including Plutarch’s Life of Alexander, where the encounter symbolizes the philosophical contrast between worldly power and self-sufficiency.

Dear Shri Raman Selvaraj
Greetings from Switzerland!
Vanakkam !

The Upanishads go even further. They do not say:
“Be independent.”
They say:
You were never dependent.
Nachiketa rejecting Yama’s offers is perhaps India’s purest Diogenes moment. Wealth, pleasure, long life — all rejected for Truth.
Because the Upanishadic discovery is terrifyingly simple:
You are not the seeker of sunlight.
You are the source of light.
Chandogya Upanishad:
Tat Tvam Asi — That Thou Art
Brihadaranyaka Upanishad:
Aham Brahmasmi — I Am Brahman
Not poetically.
Not metaphorically.
Existentially.

Wake Up to the Flow of Life
______________________________________
We often carry old feelings within us and fail to notice the fresh emotions and new ideas that arise today.
A skilled dancer does not need much time to change expressions and movements.
Likewise, our Self keeps expressing in different forms from moment to moment.
If we observe carefully, no emotion, desire, or worry lasts forever.
Anger comes and goes.
Love rises and dissolves.
Fear appears and disappears.
When we truly understand this, our expectations from time slowly drop away.
Wake up.
See life as a play.
Everything that arises will dissolve.
And one day, in reality, even we shall dissolve into the vastness of existence.
